I wish I knew! My technician says that he witnessed two 20 cm tsunami surges in Padang harbor 1.5 to 2 hours after the biggest quake. This suggests the fault rupture was shallow enough to disturb the seafloor or strong enough to cause a small submarine landslide.

I don't know, but the possibility has occurred to me.

> Do they lessen the possibility of a larger event?

Definitely not.

This is exactly the sort of thing we had immediately following the 7.1 Cape Mendo 1992 uplift, the night of and next day...but maybe this is just lift.

Whatever, they are getting good practice getting to high ground and sleeping outside in tents and collecting water now is a good idea.
Preparedness!

While these eq's will feel strong, they are considered moderate and unless construction of buildings is poor, should not cause any harm.

Hi Birdie,

Just came back from Siberut. I herewith attach a number of reports, the Mentawai translation and some pictures that will allow you to have a better idea on the situation on the ground. You are free to use the pictures for your Weblog. I will try to write a more comprehensive report on the earthquake. I also heard several stories which sounded quite interesting. Some community members reported on a one-meter tsunami in certain parts in southern Siberut after the April 10 earthquake. People living alongside the river in southern Siberut also reported a inland-going wave on the river directly after the earthquake, while in the estuary of the river no wave was reported. On the western part of the island there are reports of ground fissures, while during my time on Siberut(on the east coast), I did not see any ground fissures. Some people were saying that the high tides were lower than normal, which could indicate that the eastern part of the island has maybe been slighty uplifted (10-20 cm) However, I could not identify any visual evidence to support that assumption. We are doing are utmost best to reach out to the communities and inform them on earthquakes and establish mitigation plans at community level. We have postponed all of our regular projects on Siberut (nature conservation) for at least four months to develop an outreach program. We have developed the strategic planning already with the UNESCO team in Siberut and I am still making some final corrections to the document. I hope I can send it to you very soon.

Warm regards,

Koen

PS: I had a short meeting with Bambang from LIPI in Siberut while he was heading upnorth with his boat.
